Science is Fun! A Conference for Your Creativity

With this Conference we would like to show that science is not only a serious business, but also a lot of creativity and fun. You will find many unusual elements, like Pub Tours with Professors, a fair of Hungarian Stress-relief products (such as quality wines and artwork), a mixed lecture session to show the Stress of the Speaker. But we will also organize relaxing programs to show the connection between science and art.

Detailed information about the programs will be announced here later.

The Congress will offer a lot of special events to give an opportunity

  • to exchange ideas between various fields of stress research,
  • to help young scientists to make new contacts with established experts of the field
  • to show that Science is Fun, and
  • to give an idea about the cultural heritage of the 1000 years old Hungary.

Please find a summary of a few events enclosed here, and come back later for more-and-more creative ideas and excellent programs.

Sculpture Making Contest

Similarities of Stress: from molecules to societies

Hundreds of scientists come to the Budapest to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Hans Selye’s birth, the founder of the stress concept.

These scientists have different research fields, but one thing makes connections to all of them: the stress, which can be found in every level of the hierarchy: from molecules to societies and so on.

During this program the researchers can think together and find the similar aspects of stress and prevention of stress in each other’s area.

Groups of scientists can create their own sculpture about the motif they had found earlier, during talking to each other. So e.g.: a psychologist and a biochemist can work on a sculpture, which shows a mother (molecular chaperone) cradling her little son (unfolded protein). This sculpture illustrates the mothers’ important role in the families and the molecular chaperones’ in protein folding as well. (Both mothers and chaperones are essential to reduce the damage of stress.)

The sculptures can be made from coloured paper, wooden and metal materials, etc. (All equipments will be provided by the organizers free of charge)

The most imaginative sculptures will be selected by an expert jury. The creators will be awarded, the first prize will be free tickets to the Congress Banquet and all of the sculptures will be exhibited in the conference venue.

There is limited number of participation opportunities, so if you are interested, please do not hesitate, apply for the program as soon as possible in the following e-mail address: pappdia@yahoo.com.

Deadline of the application is 30th of June.

The participants of the FEBS-IUBMB Conference in 2005 (Budapest, Hungary), creating their award winning sculpture from scrap metal. At that conference the task of this very successful program was to find a relation between recycling in the cell and in the arts.

We hope that this unique and special program will give even more fun and good thought to the participants than the previous one did.

STRESS

Stress Reliving Dance By Dr. Urvashi Shrivastava

Indian classical dances based on devotional, soft and caressing music have ability to surround the spectators with deeply calming mood of healing relaxation. Sophisticated dance postures with soothing instrumental or vocal music background distresses mind and soul. Theme of devotional environment helps induce point-focus our stimuli. The danseuse, then with charming costumes and tender steps, subtly & slowly shepherds them to perfect tranquility.

Dr. Urvashi Shrivastava will be presenting three stress-relieving dances of total 45minutes duration in the world stress Conference-07. The dances are named as (i) Odissi (ii) Lord Rama (iii) Lord Krishna.

‘Odissi’ is a classical dance form of India. The dance theme is based on excerpts of famous Sanskrit-epic entitled “Geet Govind” written by great devotional poet ‘Jayadeva’. It portrays the sport of Lord Krishna with his devotee-lovers in beautiful, sensual and serene greenery of nature. The romantic composition of love-lyrics is enacted in slow tempo so that dancer can reverterate the emotions by facial expression, graceful gestures, glances and soft body movements to bring home to spectators the full meaning of the composition.

‘Lord Rama’ was the perfect idealist human incarnation of all Mighty, in Hindu religion. This devotional dance composition soberly enacts, verbatim, the splendid grandeur of the devine beauty in prodigious costumes and narrates Lord Rama stupendous role in the emancipation of humanity against the evils.

Lord Krishna manifested in this world to exemplify the perfect decision making amidst the tough predicament of multiple odds. ‘Brindavan’ was the sacred abode of ‘Lord Krishna’ which had splendid vegetation, groves of tress, many birds, deers and devotees intoxicated with His glory. This dance will conduct you through the odyssey of nectar lakes and streams, to the latent pulsation of life and greenery of mountains of ‘Brindavan’ and thence to the birth and growth of ‘Lord Krishna’ to his full youth.

Wellness Tent Programs

Music and relaxation

Several studies conducted in clinical settings have suggested that sedative music may have reduced stress via muscle relaxation and distraction from thoughts. Music may decrease sympathetic nervous system activity as well as anxiety, heart rate, respiratory rate and blood pressure. We offer relaxing classical music to listen in a chair some minutes so that the participants give an experience the effects of relaxing music, and refreshing after the tiredy working hours of the conference.

Relaxation

During the conference the participants will have the possibility to relax.

You can try out the progressive relaxation by consulting personally with a psychologist in the conference breaks or at any time by listening the instructions of the psychologist recorded on CD.

Alternatively, you can listen to relaxing music through headphones.

When you are stressed or anxious, there are three different components of your reaction: a physiological component (what you feel), a cognitive component (what you think) and a behavioural component (what you do).

Relaxation is the most effective way to control you bodily reactions, that has also a positive impact on your thoughts and behaviour. Daily relaxation exercise is effective to reduce the everyday stress and to improve physical and psychological well-being.

Progressive muscle relaxation is a technique developed by American physician Edmund Jacobson in the early 1920s. There are many parallels with autogenic training, which was developed independently. Jacobson trained his patients to voluntarily relax certain muscles in their body in order to reduce anxiety symptoms. He also found that the relaxation procedure effective with ulcers, insomnia, and hypertension. Nowadays Jacobson's Progressive Relaxation is the most frequently used relaxation technique in psychosomatic disorders.

Yoga

Yoga means unity, union. By controlling of body, emotions and mind we can reach our balance, harmony with ourselves and our surroundings. We get internal force to cope easier with everyday challenges, get more well-balanced while we actively assist our health.

During the conference every participant can try this type of relaxation and motion. You need only 15 minutes free!
