Hans Selye 1907-1982
Hans Selye was born
in 1907. As early as his second year of medical school (1926), he began developing his
now-famous theory of the influence of stress on people's ability to cope with and adapt to
the pressures of injury and disease. He discovered that patients with a variety of
ailments manifested many similar symptoms, which he ultimately attributed to their bodies'
efforts to respond to the stresses of being ill. He called this collection of
symptoms--this separate stress disease--stress syndrome, or the general adaptation
syndrome (GAS).
He spent a lifetime in continuing research on GAS and wrote some 30 books and more than
1,500 articles on stress and related problems, including Stress without Distress
(1974) and The Stress of Life (1956). So impressive have his findings and theories
been that some authorities refer to him as "the Einstein of medicine."
A physician and endocrinologist with many honorary degrees for his pioneering
contributions to science, Selye also served as a professor and director of the Institute
of Experimental Medicine and Surgery at the University of Montreal. More than anyone else,
Selye has demonstrated the role of emotional responses in causing or combating much of the
wear and tear experienced by human beings throughout their lives. He died in 1982 in
Montreal, where he had spent 50 years studying the causes and consequences of stress.
Selye’s 90th birth anniversary was celebrated by the predecessor of the current
meeting in 1997 resulting in a stamp and a proceedings volume to commemorate his achievements. We hope that the
current congress will bring together researchers of the stress field from all around the
world to remember Hans Selye and share their recent data.
Special session and fine arts exhibition to
commemorate Hans Selye
When stress meets art:
A fine art exhibition called "STRESS" will be organized in
cooperation with the Downtown Artists Society (www.downtownartists.hu) and the Hans Selye Hungarian Society of
Behavioral Science to commemorate Hans Selye.
Well-known Hungarian artists are invited to create and present their
oeuvres inspired by the Stress topic.
The planned date of the Opening ceremony of the exhibition is 2.00 pm August 24th,
Professor Lóránd Bertók will deliver the opening speech which will be followed by
commemorative talks of other former Hans Selye students and co-workers: István Bérczi,

Centenial Conference on Hans Selye
in Komarno/Révkomárom (January 26th
2007)
A centenial Hans Selye conference was held on the former famous inhabitant of the city
on his 100th anniversary birthday, in Komarom. In the program participants commemorated
Selye at the Selye memorial (see picture on the right). Lectures summarized Selye's role
in the history of science (Tihamér Lacza), gave a personal memory of the eminent
scientist (Lóránd Bertók) and gave an account on the legacy of Hans Selye in stress
research (Mária Kopp) and
in the memory of people (Margit Erdélyi, Viktória Horváth, Lilla Csepregi
and Attila T. Szabó).
